A Message from MGGD President
At the March 24th, 2009 MGGD meeting, the current board was re-elected for another
2-year term. Congratulations to Vice President Art Campbell, Treasurer Barb
Feldman and Secretary Lambro Niforos. I am again President.
But as I reminded the membership at the meeting, we are now term-limited and
can’t continue in our current positions 2 years from now. And several of our
committee chairs are currently vacant.
We need our membership to come forward to help with the
board and committees. Come visit the board meeting and see how much
effort it takes (not that much, really – it's usually over in an hour). To
anyone who is thinking about a board position: we will gladly work with you in
an apprenticeship type of relationship. We meet the 3rd Wednesday of the month,
7pm, at the Detroit Garden Center offices at 1900 E. Jefferson Avenue. Many of
us live on the east side in the Pointes and Detroit and can offer carpooling.
The committees that need chairpersons are Programs, Publicity, and Volunteer
Opportunities. The Program Chair finds and coordinates our speakers and since we
are set through September, you’ll have lots of time to get up to speed. The
Publicity Chair puts our upcoming meetings into the local publications and
newspapers. This Chair also gets information to our webmaster for internet
publicity. The Volunteer Opportunities Chair keeps lists of on-going volunteer
projects as well as special, one-time projects. This Chair also keeps the MSU
Extension Master Gardener Coordinator informed of all MGGD projects.
Anyone who steps up to any of these positions will not be alone. All board
members have experience in one or more of these positions. We’ll always be there
to help you if you need it.
I do want to thank Margaret Smith for stepping up and taking on the
Hospitality Chair. And Jolene Shrake will be helping with the newsletter and
website updates. Many thanks to you both.
So, don’t forget to come to the MGGD meetings (see
Events for speakers and topics). Remember that these meetings count for 1
education hour for your recertification.
SUE HANSON, MGGD PRESIDENT

gardening and the environment for homeowners, individuals, metropolitan
neighborhood or community groups. Our meetings are the fourth Wednesday
of each month at the location stated within our calendar of events.
Congratulations to our new president, Sue Ann Hanson! We are very
pleased to have Sue as our president and excited to see what she has in
store for us. Please read her personal
greeting to the Master Gardeners of Greater Detroit.
MGGD provides a link between the Master Gardener and the MSU
Extension office. By acting as a conduit between MSU and the growing
Master Gardener community, information is passed directly from MSU
